Tooting MP Sadiq Khan has been asked to pay back £1,939.93 after wrongly claiming parliamentary expenses for greetings cards.
The cards, sent to mark Diwali, Eid and the 18th birthdays of constituents, were bought in 2005 when he first came to office.
Claiming cards on expenses was against the rules, but the House of Commons authorities still processed the bill.
This week Mr Khan said he claimed in error before he knew the rules and has paid the sum back.
Mr Khan said: “As a new MP I made an honest mistake, for which I am sorry.
"All greeting cards I send are now paid by sponsorship.
“I’m pleased the parliamentary commissioner completely exonerated me.
"One of the best things to come out of this is clarity in the application of the rules.”
