A Tooting woman in her 50s, rescued from a fire last week, died on Mother’s Day, police confirmed.
Firefighters hoped they had saved Karen Connard when they broke into her flat and rushed her to hospital by air ambulance on March 12.
But after two days of intensive treatment for smoke inhalation and burns, she died at 9.10pm in Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford.
Ms Connard was found semi-conscious at a ground-floor flat in Nimrod Road, near the junction of South-croft Road.
Neighbours raised the alarm at about 10am after her sofa caught fire.
Fire crews from Tooting and Mitcham broke in through a window, passing her out to colleagues.
She was driven to Furzedown Recreation Ground, where an air ambulance flew her to the Essex hospital, which has a specialist burns unit.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
