Residents are warned not to hand over donations of second hand goods to collectors at their doors without checking how they will be used.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) said commercial collectors can pocket up to 60 per cent of the good’s value, because they sell them on to charities.
BHF said householders must be given clear information from collectors about where exactly the proceeds of their goods are going.
