Small businesses in Sutton are still feeling the force of the recession with 70 per cent sayin they are affected by the downturn, the same figure as in October 2009.

But despite the setbacks they remain positive for the year ahead according to Business Link in London’s Business Confidence Index (BCI).

While 53 per cent, compared to 51 per cent in October, of Sutton’s small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are experiencing a decline in profits, an overwhelming majority ,95 per cent, have high hopes for the next twelve months.

Other findings show that 42 per cent of Sutton’s SMEs have experienced a decline in national sales compared to 36 per cent in October.

Denis Palmer, of Business Link in London, said: “A recovering economy does not mean that Sutton’s small businesses are out of the woods – recovery on the business front generally takes longer to manifest itself and the borough’s entrepreneurs need to remain on their toes in the months ahead to ensure they’re on track.

“Now more than ever, Sutton’s SMEs must ensure they have a robust business plan in place to stand them in good stead for the year ahead – so we urge them to contact Business Link in London to utilise the practical advice given by our Business Advisers, workshops and online guides.”

The quarterly Business Confidence Index measures the business sentiment of over 3,000 of London’s SMEs during this year’s first quarter (January to March) including 80 Sutton based companies.
