Education bosses are preparing for Merton’s primary places crisis to hit classrooms across the entire borough - as the names of the next three schools set to expand are revealed.

Councillor Krystal Miller of Merton Council is overseeing the expansion programme. She said she expected the massive shortage of places - which until now has largely affected the west of the borough - to become greater in Colliers Wood and Morden next year.

In line with the changing pattern, the three schools highlighted for expansion are spread across the borough. They are Bishop Gilpin C of E Primary School in Wimbledon, Aragon Primary School in Morden and Cranmer Primary School in Mitcham.

Some of the expansions will be permanent, while others might only be temporary depending on whether pupil numbers drop again in the coming years.

Coun Miller said the latest figures showed demand for places had gone up in the Wimbledon Village area but steadied in the town centre.

Last month the council announced a new school would be built in north Wimbledon to meet rocketing demand for places.

She said: “We have only approached schools that have strong headteachers and governing bodies that we believe are capable of overseeing an expansion.”
