Morden: a centre of transportation; a place where retreat seems the most unlikely attainment among the hurried and restless movement of each new tide. However, beyond the rumbling of engines and unsettling feeling of restiveness, there can be found a most beautiful oasis of serenity: Morden Hall Park. This hidden treasure is a particularly valued area of sanctuary within the community, owing its preservation to the dedicated work of the National Trust.
The National Trust is a charity, founded in 1895 by three Victorian Philanthropists who established the charity in order to preserve and protect buildings, countryside and coastline of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The charity was a direct response to the impact of development and industrialisation and aims to protect our heritage through the acquisition and protection of threatened areas. The charity continues to this day in the conservation of land and monuments which are important in the maintenance of the British legacy. Already, over the last 100 years, the charity has acquired 709 miles of coastline, 254,000 hectares of countryside and more than 350 houses, ancient monuments, gardens, nature reserves and parks.
One of these parks includes Morden Hall Park, which is a particular example of the wonderful work that the National Trust has continued over the years. The charity works to make the park an inspiring and hospitable environment for all. The snuff mill environmental centre provides an educational venue funded by the National trust, which inspires young minds to collaborate in order to preserve the environment and encourage a greater sense of respect for one’s environment.
Over the Easter holiday, the National Trust invites us to join the endless array of activities that our communal treasure excites. There are a number of events which include such entertainment as the “Easter eggstravaganza” where an exciting trail can be followed in search for hidden eggs; artistic workshops where you can meet local artists; and family fundays which involve interesting and exciting themes for all generations united.
