On Friday, March 19th 2010, both Junior and Senior Departments of Croydon High School, along with some members of the public and pupils from Atwood School, turned out in the lovely grounds of Croydon High School to walk or run the Sport Relief Mile. All paid to enter and the girls paid to wear tracksuits for the rest of the day, raising much-appreciated money for the Sport Relief charity. Many chose ‘team clothes’, so there were many long stripy socks, bright tops and official Sport Relief socks and t-shirts!
Sport Relief is a branch of Comic Relief, the massive nationwide charity which raises money for poor and underprivileged people, both overseas and right here in the UK. The money is spent in countries as diverse as South Africa, Brazil and India, buying much-needed medical equipment and helping children get off the streets. Sport Relief tries to help children for life, by providing not only nutritious food and safe places to sleep, but also education, so the children have the opportunity to help themselves escape from poverty.
With all the money raised going to such a worthy and valuable cause, it is no wonder there was such a sense of excitement and enthusiasm as the mile commenced – a fantastic sum was raised, and hopefully many will benefit.
