The borough's children are to be advised on safety as part of a six-week scheme.

More than 3,000 children aged 10 and 11 will be learning how to keep safe and make life-saving decisions as part of the Young Citizens Scheme.

The sessions, which will take place at Frylands scout camp in Featherbed Lane, Addington, from September 12, will give pupils advice on what to do in situations involving fires and dangers in the home.

The scheme, which has been running since 1989, is organised by Croydon Council's road safety unit with support from the police, ambulance, fire services and other groups.

There will be an awards ceremony in November for those who take part.

Adrian Dennis, cabinet member for planning, environment and urban development, said: "The Young Citizens Scheme has many aims, such as promoting sensible attitudes, but the most important is equipping our youngsters with the knowledge to make safe decisions and the life skills to act accordingly.

"It reinforces the safety messages from various bodies and helps to bring them together in a fun and challenging way. It's about gaining real' experience and the response from children who have taken the course in the past has always been positive."
