A man who got into a verbal row with a gang of youths who were blocking his pathway ended up being attacked with a broken bottle by one of them, a court heard.

Paul Mackwood had to have 18 stitches after his face was slashed by 19-year-old Matthew Tyrrell. He was sentenced to three years after admitting grievous bodily harm with intent at Croydon Crown Court last Friday.

Tyrrell, of Oakbank, New Addington, was one of a group of youths blocking the pavement in George Street just after midnight on February 10.

When Mr Mackwood bumped into one of them, an argument started.

Tyrrell pushed Mr Mackwood to the wall and demanded an apology, hitting him over the face and head with a broken bottle.

Police arrested Tyrrell soon afterwards outside a local nightclub and he admitted the attack while being interviewed.

Judge Stephen Waller told Tyrrell: "This was a serious offence. The victim was a total stranger.

"You followed him and you broke a bottle and used it around his face and head.

"I have no doubt you behaved like this through drink.

"Unfortunately, it happens like this in the area every Friday and Saturday night. People with an ordinary background suddenly act in an alien and violent fashion."
