ADO Den Haag currently stand ninth in the top flight of Dutch football, the Eredivisie. And now ADO coach Frans Adelaar has snapped up Palace winger Joonas Kolkka on a free transfer.

Kolkka signed back in July 2004 and promised much, scoring rare goals from a goal-shy Palace midfield.

So just why have we let, on paper, a quality player of 30 years of age and 56 international caps go for zilch? Yes we have dropped down a division but there wasn't any rumblings of discontent from Kolkka, nor did his wages appear to be of too much concern. Contract wise, he had a year to run.

Kolkka's fitness wasn't an issue either, having played in most of Palace's games last season. When speculation first surfaced about the move, Bob Dowie was also quick to play it down, claiming Kolkka "is our only left sided midfielder at present, so he is a firm part of our plans."

But for all this, his career at Palace never really got going. Bad luck, bad attitude or bad management, who knows? A case of what if's and maybe's but ultimately Kolkka was deemed surplus to requirements. Good luck at your new club, Joonas.
