Free safety checks will be carried out on electric blankets during fire safety week.
Croydon trading standards department and the London Fire Brigade will be running the free checks next Thursday.
The last time checks were carried out by the trading standards department it reported that there was a 49 per cent failure rate.
Councillor Paul Smith, cabinet member for public protection and crime reduction, said: "This is an important safety initiative.
"I would urge anyone who has had an electric blanket for more than three years to book an appointment.
"As the greatest risks are associated with older people please encourage them to have their electric blankets tested."
