It has taken more than a year but the Tamworth Road tram stop could finally be open in time for Christmas.

The tram stop outside Centrale has a platform in place which was built and paid for by developer St Martin's as a condition of its planning permission for the shopping centre.

However, 21 trams an hour pass Centrale's Tamworth Road entrance without stopping because the equipment needed to convert the platform into a proper tram stop is missing. Now Transport for London is to pay for the changes as part of a £3.5million investment programme.

It is also working with Tramtrack, which runs Croydon's tram service, on a set of timetable changes which will reduce overcrowding and improve reliability.

The changes will see eight trams an hour run between 7am-7pm Monday to Friday and 8am-8pm on Saturdays on the Wimbledon to New Addington line.

Six trams an hour will run between Beckenham Junction and East Croydon and six trams an hour on the Elmers End to New Addington spur.
