Police are appealing for witnesses to an accident which killed an elderly man and seriously injured his wife during the rush hour last Friday.

Driver Desmond Carr, 77, of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, died at the scene on September 2, while his wife Rosemary, 70, suffered serious spinal injuries.

The Carrs' green Rover 620si automatic was in collision with a new Ford Fiesta ST at the junction of Edgehill Road and Purley Way, Croydon, at around 6.35pm. Police believe a third vehicle a Vauxhall Corsa Sri was also involved.

A post-mortem into Mr Carr's death was due to be held yesterday. Mrs Carr was still in intensive care at St George's Hospital in Tooting as the Croydon Guardian went to press.
