A Streatham man with learning disabilities has been awarded for his work as a travel buddy, helping take a disadvantaged Tulse Hill woman on public transport.
Michael Elliot has been walking with Karen Murphy, who has serious learning difficulties, on her trips to Tulse Hill Day Centre and Lambeth College since November.
He trained to work and be paid as part of Lambeth Council's without walls travel and transport project.
The project sees travel assistants support people to become more independent by using buses, trains or the Underground rather than relying on door-to-door transport such as taxis.
Mr Elliot, who previously used the service himself, was awarded earlier this month along with other project members by Lambeth mayor Councillor Christopher Wellbelove.
