Hundreds of screaming fans have seen Merton’s brightest young stars shine on stage.

Merton’s Got Youth Talent, a fundraising talent show, saw fearless performers from the borough’s schools hitting the high notes and displaying their dance moves on Friday.

The X-Factor style event at Bishopsford School was organised by the mayor of Merton, Councillor Nick Draper.

He said: “The performances were absolutely extraordinary - all the acts were of such a high quality.”

The competition was won by Asante Duhur, Tamara Kalisilira and Antoinette Torto - a trio of acapella singers from Wimbledon’s Ursuline High School.

The runner up was Joseph Snelling from Wimbledon College, the show’s youngest performer, while third place was shared by Moonwalking Michael Jackson tribute act Luke Pellay of Cricket Green special school and Ursuline’s Chloe Chambers.

Secondary schools across the borough had held heats to find their top performers ahead of last week’s final.

The event at the Morden school raised cash for the mayor’s nominated good causes - mental health charity Merton Mind and Grenfell Housing and Training, a support service for homeless young people.

Coun Draper said he wanted the contest to return next year with all of the borough’s schools taking part.

He said: “The overwhelming success of last Friday means it's clear to me that this should be an annual event, to show the world how proud we are of our young people, of their achievement and their potential.”

The competition featured acts from Bishopsford, St Mark’s, Ursuline, Raynes Park, Ricards Lodge, Wimbledon College and Cricket Green schools - as well as a performance by 90s pop singer Rozalla Miller.
