School building projects across Lambeth could face the axe if the Conservatives win power, it has been claimed.

The £280m Building Schools for the Future Programme (BSF) has already seen the rebuilding of four existing secondary schools in the borough, including pupil referral unit Park Campus, and Elm Court School in West Norwood.

But Labour parliamentary candidate for Streatham, Chuka Umunna, said Tory cost-cutting measures could see plans to renovate other schools in the borough as part of the programme scrapped.

This includes projects at St Martin in the Fields in Tulse Hill, and Dunraven and Bishop Thomas Grant schools planned for the next four years.

He said: "If we are to provide the very best for our children, this investment must continue."

Mr Umunna's claims follow comments by shadow Schools Minister Nick Gibb that only school building schemes where funding was already secured would be guaranteed under the current programme.

A Conservative spokeswoman denied funding cuts, saying the Tories only wanted to improve the programme.

She said: "The fact is the process Labour have been using to build schools is incredibly complex, expensive and time-consuming.

"We believe by massively simplifying the programme and making it more flexible we can rebuild or refurbish schools faster where they are needed most."
