A Coulsdon pensioner will be scaling the peaks of Snowdon this June and performing a handstand for charity at the summit.

Peter Ford, 66, will attempt to complete a circuit of the Snowdon Horseshoe mountain range in North Wales in under eight hours.

He is hoping to raise £1,500 for The Prostate Cancer Charity and will be photographed doing a handstand at the summit.

Mr Ford was diagnosed with prostate cancer in November 2008 and underwent major surgery last February.

He said: “After taking most of last year to recuperate I now feel more like a teenager again.

“I’m really excited about tackling Snowdon the hard way, both for the physical challenge and also to show how well people can recover from prostate cancer surgery”.

He is preparing for the challenge by doing regular hill walks, yoga and by climbing the sleep flight of steps at a nearby train station.

He said: “If I climb these steps 250 times, that’s about the height I need to gain on the day.”

Claire Walsh, head of community fundraising for the charity, said: "Peter is a great inspiration to anyone facing a diagnosis of prostate cancer and we appreciate all of his efforts to raise awareness of the disease and funds for the charity.”

The Prostate Cancer Charity researches the causes, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer and provides support to those affected by the disease .
