Jimmy Cooper reckons Wednesday night’s historic London Senior Cup triumph for the Metropolitan Police highlights just what might have been for his Blues side this season.

The Met stunned AFC Wimbledon 4-3 on penalties after an incident-packed 4-4 draw following extra time at Harrow Borough.

And Cooper admits the victory, the first for the Police in the history of the competition, is tinged with regret.

He said: “There is definitely a bittersweet edge to it.

“Our league campaign has been so poor this year and certainly not what we expected.

“When we play the better sides, like Wimbledon, we often beat them but we do not do enough against the lower teams.

“The players that I brought in this season have the wrong mentality and that is something that I will have to address.

“But for now we will enjoy this.

“Considering there are names like Chelsea and West Ham on that trophy it is a great achievement to have won it.”

Goals from Gary Drewett (two), Vernon Francis and Steve Sutherland hauled the Blues back from 3-1 and 4-3 deficits, with Paul Honey stroking home the clinching penalty.

Cooper added: “In the first half we were in awe of them and gave them too much room.

“But we sorted that out and were right in it.

“It was a fantastic spectacle and could really have gone either way.

“We showed a lot of character and gave an excellent account of ourselves against a very, very good side.”

Despite their Ryman Division One South campaign ending with Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Whitstable Town, the football is not over for Craig Brown, Will Packham, James Greenaway and Steve Flinn who have all been named in the British Police squad for May’s European Championships in Greece.

And the Met boss reckons that is a more than deserved honour.

Cooper added: “It is a massive achievement for them.

“The British Police have a very strong squad and the standard of the tournament will be very high so we will certainly get the benefit of that.”
