George Dow Green Carshalton & Wallington

Q. What are your views on the MPs' expenses issue?

A. Like everyone else, I think it’s appalling that some MP’s have behaved immorally. I am however concerned that this has led to a general cynicism about all politicians which I believe is unwarranted.

Q. If you had to pick the single biggest issue you will campaign on as MP for the borough, what would that be?

A. Promoting the local economy.

Q. What is your biggest regret?

A. Not scoring a hat-trick for Scotland at Hampden.

Q. What was your biggest achievement at school/university?

A. Academically - an MBA. But I also found in the value of learning for learning's sake – and that it’s not just about getting a better job.

Q. Do you believe in euthanasia?

A. I believe that life is a gift from God – but I would never be judgemental about anyone who was faced with such a terrible situation.

Q. Have you ever smoked cannabis?

A. Yes.

Q. How did you get involved in politics?

A. There is a history in my family of political involvement (Labour) – and I joined the Labour Party in the early 80’s.

Q. How long have you lived in the borough?

A. 30 years.

Q. Have you ever belonged to another political party?

A. Yes – I was an active member of the Labour Party, finally leaving when the country illegally invaded Iraq.

Q. What do you recycle?

A. Just about everything I can – although instead of recycling I try not to buy stuff in the first place.

Q. If you have one item on a desert island, what would it be any why?

A. Radio 4 springs to mind – I would need a regular update on The Archers.

Q. Where would you least like to live in the borough and where would you most like to live in the borough?

A. I really like living where I am at the moment – Hackbridge is a good place to be. My allotment, a good community spirit and a great train service to London. Can’t think of any particular place I wouldn’t like to live – but near access to green space is important.

Q. What is the borough's best attribute?

A. Can I choose 3? – Parks, the River Wandle and an appreciation of the history of the place.

Q. Do you agree with abortion or are you pro-life?

A. I am concerned about the rising number of abortions.

Q. What's your favourite biscuit?

A. Afraid I don’t eat biscuits – put on weight too easily.

Q. What happened when you first got drunk and did you learn your lesson?

A. First got drunk when 17 – on my last day at school. Yes – definitely learned my lesson, having to be delivered back home by one of the teachers!

Q. What annoys you?

A. Intolerance and lack of respect for others.

Q. Do you do the washing up or do you get others to do it?

A. I think I do my fair share.

Q. Apart from a house what is the most expensive item you have bought for yourself?

A. Not very green – a car – a Nissan Micra.

Q. Facebook or Twitter?

A. Haven’t used either – but from the little I know about them, Facebook would get my vote.
