Recently there has been an uproar surrounding plans to introduce parking charges for the first time in Richmond Park. The idea is to charge visitors £2 per hour to park in one of the six car parks on location.

Since 1798 the park has been open for the public’s enjoyment and it has always been free to park in the premises. However, this may be about to change. There have been many complaints sent to the Royal Parks Agency, and many members of the public are furious at the council’s decision. Some are arguing that the charge will decrease the number of elderly and disabled visitors, as their only means of travel are vehicles- an issue which is seen by some as discriminating.

One local lover of the park voiced her opinion on the proposed parking charge. “I think the decision is disgusting. Going to Richmond Park is meant to be a chance to relax and take it easy. But with this new parking fine, I won’t be able to relax-I’m going to be worried about how much I’m spending every hour! Whole days spent at the park will be out of the question now.”

If the plans are successful, Bushy Park in Teddington will be the only Royal Parks Agency park left remaining with free parking. However, the decision is still yet to be confirmed, so all people can do now is hope and wait.
