On 26th May 2010, Gumley House School's Year 9 debating team succeeded in securing the top prize in the borough for their year. The team from the Isleworth school have now won for two years running. In last year’s competition they came first in the Year 8 category. One of the team of three said: “I’m really shocked. I can’t believe we won again!”
The Championship was held in Hounslow’s Civic Centre for Years 7 to 10. The motions ranged from political issues to scientific controversies including "Fair Trade", "Voting age" and "Sacking MPs who do a bad job". Six local schools attended and competed from around the borough with an overall winner for every year group.
The Gumley House team was supporting the argument that the voting age should be lowered to sixteen. “I’ll admit, I was scared when we were given our argument”, the young debater continues, “but we came up with enough points and the judges seemed to like it”. The team received their yellow and red ribboned medals with huge smiles of happiness and success. “It really is amazing to win the Championship again – I think everyone could see how happy we were. I am definitely going to carry on debating next year”.
Who knows? Perhaps next year the team will once again come first and grab the Year 10 award for themselves and their school.
