Concern has been raised after a railway operator announced it was erecting a 10m high mast close to homes.

Fawe Park Road resident Isabel Wooller questioned Network Rail after it sent out letters to houses in East Putney revealing a plan to install the communications mast.

She said: “They claim that no planning permission is required and plan to start work in two weeks time.

“It appears that, in addition to the aesthetic issues of having this mast behind our gardens, there are potential health risks from the constant low level microwaves. The neighbourhood is extremely concerned.”

However, a spokesman for Network Rail said the mast was necessary to improve “safety, reliability and punctuality for all passengers” by enabling “direct and continuous communication between train drivers and signallers”.

He said: “When selecting a site for a communications mast we take great care to evaluate the local environment and community issues, as well as choosing a site which meets the strict operational requirements of the system.

“In this instance by placing a mast at the railway junction, as proposed, we can get radio coverage in three directions, removing the need for additional masts nearby.”
