A campaign group has launched a petition against a controversial plan to temporarily move Streatham’s ice rink to Brixton – warning leading hockey teams could fold.

Skaters 4 the Hub oppose the planned three-year move to the Pope’s Road car park site next summer, while the Streatham Hub development, that features a new ice rink, is built in Streatham High Road.

The campaign group’s spokesman Trevor Hutton said current proposals for a temporary home had no seating, meaning national ice hockey team Streatham Redskins would not be able to charge fans to enter, costing them revenue and putting them under threat.

There are also safety fears, concerns over a lack of parking, and questions whether a smaller rink will be suitable for professionals to train.

Mr Hutton wants a site in Streatham Vale to be considered for the temporary rink along with Crystal Palace Park in Bromley.

He said: “Both of these sites can be built quicker, will cost less, provide adequate parking and transport, and will be large enough to meet all of our minimum requirements.”

Lambeth Council and Tesco said when the plans were discussed at a public meeting this summer the Pope’s Road site was the most suitable.
