A busy high street which is fast becoming a “patchwork quilt of paving slabs” may end up being completely relaid at the taxpayers’ expense, it has been claimed.
John Horrocks, of Angel Mews, Roehampton believes the town’s high street looks terrible due to damaged paving slabs - some of which are out of keeping with the traditional ones used.
He has written to Wandsworth Council demanding an explanation and an assurance that action will be taken to rectify the problem.
However, the Putney Society member claims he was told by officials that the style of slab once used was no longer available and they could not replace like for like.
He said: “It may be that Roehampton High Street has to be completely relaid to ensure we have a consistent pavement rather than a patchwork quilt of paving slabs.”
However, a council spokesman, who admitted it was “probably fair to say that the appearance of the pavements could be improved”, this week assured the Wandsworth Guardian the problem was about to be resolved.
He blamed utility companies that have dug the street up in recent years for replacing slabs with “the nearest matches they could find”.
He said “Happily we have now managed to find a new supply of the right stones and are now contacting the utility companies to inform them that we expect them to purchase these and install them in the high street and put right their previous works.”
