The streets of Clapham are to be reclaimed for one day only as the town goes car free and tarmac is replaced with real grass.

Cars will be banned in Clapham old town on Sunday, September 19, and the streets turfed over for a day of celebration with live music, games, performances and workshops for all ages.

The event aims to show how urban spaces can be better used without vehicles driving through or parking in them. It will also give a possible taster of the future.

As part of the Clapham Gateway scheme, neighbouring Lambeth Council is proposing the re-location of the bus stand in centre of old town, the removal of the eastern carriageway to through traffic and the creation of a new piazza area.

With the sounds of motor engines and car horns silenced, there will be singing from a Clapham based choir and performances from other local musicians powered by pedal power.

The day will see markets stalls, activities for the children in the family play area including a sand pit, face painting, games and a cycling clown, and much more.

The event runs from 12 until 5pm and all are welcome.
