Two women believed to have witnessed an assault outside the George pub in Esher High Street have been asked to come forward.
Surrey Police officers this week released CCTV images of the two women they want to speak to regarding the incident on Saturday, August 7, when a taxi driver was pushed in the chest.
The assault took place between 1.45am and 2am when three men asked the taxi driver the cost of a journey.
One of the men walked away, but the other two men became involved in an argument with the driver regarding the quoted fare, which led to the alleged assault.
One of the men also scratched the taxi with a metal object.
Officers attending the scene arrested a 40-year-old man from London on suspicion of common assault, and he was later released on police bail until September 17.
Glen Gordon of Surrey Police said: “We are very keen to speak to speak to two women in their mid-20s who witnessed the incident and intervened.
“Unfortunately both women had left the scene before officers arrived and we believe they may be able to provide vital information to aid this ongoing investigation.
“This was a nasty incident where a taxi driver was subjected to sustained verbal abuse and physical intimidation.
“Fortunately the man was not injured as a result of the incident but this was clearly an upsetting incident which is being thoroughly investigated.”
Anyone who witnessed the assault or recognises either of the women in the CCTV images should call Surrey Police on 0845 1252222, quoting reference EL/10/6191, or call impendent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
