Traumatised victims of the Sri Lanka conflict were the targets of a mental health project in Wandsworth last week.
Mental health professionals met local Tamil people for a two-day conference about post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other related issues.
The event started on Friday at the Shree Ghanapathy temple in Wimbledon, where key speakers included psychiatry expert Dr Daya Somasundaram.
On Saturday members of the local Tamil community were invited to Springfield Hospital, Tooting, to talk with NHS workers and other community organisations.
Stuart Thomson, director of mental health for Wandsworth, said: “We are really pleased at what has been achieved between the NHS, local networks and the Tamil community.
“Other groups, such as local Somalian and Pakistani communities will also benefit from this conference as it has given an insight into the amount of support needed by those affected by international conflict.”
The event was a joint project between South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust, Faiths in Action, NHS Wandsworth and NHS Sutton and Merton.
