Lambeth Council has promised to investigate complaints from residents relating to a West Norwood club – after reports of shots being fired by people leaving the venue.

Incidents of antisocial behaviour from revellers leaving West Norwood Snooker Club, Norwood Road, have caused many residents to complain to Thurlow Park ward councillor Clare Whelan.

Coun Whelan said their fears had escalated after they reported hearing shots fired as people left the club on Saturday, August 28.

Police said they had no record of a shooting that night, but did have reports of noise from large groups leaving the club, and an illegal food stand outside being shut down.

But Coun Whelan said an officer had told her bullet casings had been found nearby.

Coun Whelan said: “This is a serious incident that has come on the back of previously low-level antisocial behaviour.

“It’s not acceptable that people are afraid to walk back to their homes late at night.”

Coun Whelan has called for officials who could help to deal with the problem to get together to work towards a solution.

Councillor Lorna Campbell, cabinet member for environment, said: “Neighbours should not have to put up with noise nuisance, and I’m concerned to hear about these complaints and have asked our licensing team to monitor the situation carefully.

“If residents or councillors apply for a review of the premises’ licence, then the matter can be brought before the council’s licensing sub-committee.”

The snooker club was contacted but was unavailable for comment.
