Lorry drivers who flout road weight restrictions were targeted by a police crackdown.
Police officers stopped truck drivers whose vehicle weight was over 7.5 tonnes at a checkpoint in Sandy Lane South, Wallington, on Monday.
Beddington South safer neighbourhood team and the Metropolitan Police’s specialist commercial vehicle unit stopped a number of offending heavy vehicles.
PC Sandra Wainright, of the commercial vehicle unit, urged drivers to comply with the law.
She said: “The 7.5 tonne weight restriction is clearly marked at either end of this road.
“It’s very important drivers of heavy vehicles don’t use this road, because they will be endangering the lives of other road users.”
Sergeant John Withersby, of Beddington South SNT, said residents made it clear they did not want large lorries or trucks along the road, which is often regarded as a shortcut for traffic between Purley and Wallington.
Vehicles are not allowed to use the road if they exceed 7.5 tonnes, unless they have proof they are making a delivery along the road.
Drivers exceeding 7.5 tonnes can be issued with a £30 penalty and a police letter to the driver’s company, explaining what action had been taken.
Sgt Withersby invited residents to contact Beddington South SNT with the company livery or registration details of any offending vehicles.
