James Vaughan has praised the quality of the Crystal Palace squad and talked up the chances of extending his loan spell from Everton past December.
Having bagged his first senior hat-trick in the 4-1 demolition of Portsmouth on Tuesday night on his home debut for the Eagles, the former England U21 international was also quick to point out the contribution made by his team mates.
“If Palace want to keep me and Everton want to let me stay, it’s out of my hands really” said Vaughan. “I've just got to keep enjoying my football and see where it takes me. It’s a great club. I’m enjoying it, there is great quality in the squad so I don’t see why I could not stay on"
“I was definitely pushing to come out and play some games, I got my wish, and at the moment it’s paying off. I just want to push on from here and get some more games under my belt.”
“I couldn’t have scored my hat-trick without the lads. There is always pressure on strikers to score goals and do well for the team. But the lads made it so much easier for me by creating a lot of chances, and I probably should have scored a few more.”
“Kieran Djilali and Kieron Cadogan in the wide positions, I thought they were fantastic. It was good to see them play so well. They are very talented players.”
Vaughan was denied a fourth goal against Portsmouth after Neil Danns took it upon himself to convert the penalty he won in the 81st minute, an opportunity that the Everton loanee had been eyeing up himself; “I would have liked it but Dannsy played brilliant and I thought he deserved it. I came here last season and he ran the game from the first minute and I knew what I was coming to play with when I came here, and he’s not disappointed me so far.”
With family members from all over the country watching him from the stands, Vaughan was especially pleased that they witnessed his strikes, something he hopes to repeat for them again on Saturday with the visit of Burnley to Selhurst Park.
As for a prediction for where Palace would be come the end of the season, Vaughan was refusing to get carried away in the afterglow of a thumping win; “I think we are going to have to take it one game at a time but all of us are quietly confident that we can start pushing up the table, getting some points.”
