A massive manhunt involving armed police units, a helicopter and officers from Epsom CID is underway in Epsom after a man threatened workmen with a sword and slashed their van tyres.
The sword-wielding offender has been on the loose since yesterday (Wednesday, September 15) at 2pm when workers from an utility provider were attempting to execute a Right of Entry order, in West Ewell, and were threatened by the thug.
According to Surrey Police, officers from Epsom CID are working to trace the man.
A number of officers responded to the emergency call from from a worker in Worthfield Close. The man inside the house became violent, threatened the workmen with a weapon, believed to be a sword, before slashing the tyres of their van.
No one was injured.
A large number of police officers were drafted in to search for the suspect who had fled the scene in a car.
A number of addresses believed to be linked to the sword-wielding thug were searched yesterday, and today in Plough Road, Ewell, and the police helicopter was also used to assist officers on the ground.
He is described as a white man, aged in his mid to late 40s, with balding grey hair.
Detective Sergeant Glenn Parker said: “Enquiries are continuing to locate the suspect and we would appeal to him directly to get in touch with police.
“We do not believe he poses a risk to the wider community but members of the public are advised not to approach the suspect if they see him instead asked to contact Surrey Police.
“Violent and threatening behaviour like this is totally unacceptable and I would like to reassure the wider community we are doing all we can to locate this man. I know rumours are already circulating at some schools in the area regarding yesterday’s incident but please rest assured detectives and local neighbourhood officers are working together to ensure your safety.”
