Elmbridge proved it has some of the most revered green spaces in southern England, after some of the borough’s natural treasures were given awards.

Two categories for the south and south-east In Bloom 2010 had prize-winning entries from Elmbridge Council.

Popular with dog walkers and bird watchers, Esher’s West End Common was awarded best conservation area for its supporting various forms of natural wildlife.

Hersham Memorial Garden, a formal Edwardian- style memorial garden dedicated to those who died during the First and Second World War, also won best small park.

Councillor Jan Fuller, the council’s lead member for leisure and cultural services, said: “This demonstrates the council’s commitment to supporting communities and improving countryside sites and parks within Elmbridge.

"These awards give recognition to those involved in achieving high standards."

A Silver Gilt was also awarded to Hersham In Bloom, which was recently approved for a grant from the Elmbridge Civic Improvement Fund.
