BBC’s Songs of Praise is coming to Carshalton next month and will feature the work of British film producer Joseph Arthur Rank.

Filming will take place at Carshalton Methodist Church on October 14 with the programme to be aired nationally on Sunday, November 21.

Singers from Sutton’s churches, choirs and concert groups have been invited to come together and perform five hymns.

Lord Rank, film producer and Christian philanthropist, was one of the most important figures in British cinema in the middle of the last century.

He promoted and funded the use of film in Methodist churches and chapels throughout the country and his parents are buried in Sutton Cemetery.

The BBC decided to use Carshalton Methodist Church when they heard about the community cinema group based at the church which uses some of Lord Rank’s cinematograohy techniques.

The Ruskin Community Cinema runs monthly film performances and uses film to work with uniformed organisations, environmental groups and homes for the elderly and disadvantaged.

A BBC crew will also be present to film the Ruskin Community Cinema in action on the evening
