Complaints to a water company have more than doubled in the last two years - but bosses deny its service is getting worse.

Letters and calls from angry customers to Sutton and East Surrey rose from 357 in 2007/08 to 722 in 2009/10, according to new figures from watchdog the Consumer Council for Water.

The company supplies water to 270,000 customers, including thousands of homes in Morden.

A spokesman for the company said the rise was down to the installation of more water metres as part of a government drive. He claimed inquiries about how to use the new metres were logged as complaints - even if there was no problem to be reported - and this was behind the rise in numbers.

This year the company received about 25 complaints per 10,000 customers, placing it in the middle of the watchdog’s league table of suppliers.
