A South Norwood Victorian town house is being torn down after an explosion ripped through the building.

On Thursday morning a huge explosion destroyed two floors of the 175-year-old house prompting the evacuation of six surrounding homes.

Nineteen people were taken to shelter as fireman battled the blaze.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “Shortly after firefighting was started there was a partial collapse at the front of the building.

“Crews were withdrawn and firefighting was undertaken from the outside.

“A dangerous structure engineer was required to advise the brigade on the stability of the building.”

The building, on the brink of collapse, is being torn down today to limit the danger to surrounding properties.

The building is due to be totally demolished within the next 48 hours.
