Clapham Junction is set for a student invasion after a plan to build accommodation for young people attending Imperial College was given the thumbs up.
Wandsworth Council’s planning application committee approved a proposal to build 114 studio flats for the students on September 16.
The plan will see the demolition of a former children’s home and the building of accommodation on the site of the disused and derelict building in Winstanley Road.
Each flat will contain a study cum sleeping area, as well as a kitchen and bathroom. The six storey building will also contain a secure bike storage area for 74 bicycles.
There will be a handful of off-street parking spaces and the students will not be permitted to buy parking permits for the area's existing controlled parking zone.
Out of 175 neighbours, only three objections were received. One claimed “further granting of development will allow large corporate home builders to tear through and bulldoze community”.
Complainants also said “these buildings will encourage more large scale developments into this area with loss of its character”, adding they “don’t want noisy parties or students”.
Planning applications chairman, Councillor Nick Cuff, said: “This is good news for shops and business in the town centre who will undoubtedly benefit from the increased trade this development will bring.
“As well as the benefits for food and grocery shops in Falcon Road, these new residents will no doubt also deliver a welcome boost to the entire night time economy in Clapham Junction town centre, especially its bars and restaurants.
“This investment is another step forward in the ongoing process of regeneration that is well underway in and around Clapham Junction.”
It has not yet been announced when building work will begin.
