More than 100 girl guides and brownies have celebrated a year of achievements during a special award ceremony.

Dedicated girls from across the borough received medallions, framed certificates and a £200 prize for their divisions in the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards after being nominated by friends and leaders.

More than a dozen adult leaders also picked up prizes during the ceremony at Trinity School on September 20.

Winners included 12-year-old Niamh Bulley from the 19th Purley Brownies, who gained her pack an all-paid trip to London with the prize from her award.

Chloe White, 17, from the 8th Sanderstead/1st Riddlesdown Brownies showed outstanding commitment to a special needs member of her pack to win her award, while 12-year-old Frances Bullen from 5th Upper Norwood Guides proved herself a hard-working role model to her peers.

Croydon mayor Avril Slipper said: “I congratulate all those girls receiving awards and it is particularly interesting to see awards for things that really matter in life.

“Organisations such as Girl Guides cannot function without leaders so a big thank you to all the adults who give up their time and work so hard to help the girls reach their full potential.”

The awards scheme has provided more than £50,000 to Guides Croydon County, the biggest youth organisation in the borough, since it was started in 2008.
