A surprise party was held for long-time Thames Ditton resident Bill Doe to celebrate his 100th birthday.

The party was held at the Thames Ditton Centre for the Community where Mr Doe goes twice a week for lunch.

His guests at the party, who included Councillor John Sheldon, the deputy major of Elmbridge, were entertained with a rendition of Happy Birthday by a choir from Thames Ditton Junior School.

Mr Doe was a food chemist by profession at J Lyons in London and lived in Thames Ditton for 24 years before moving to his current home in Hinchley Wood.

His first name was Cedric, but his late wife told him she would not marry him if he kept the name.

He put his longevity down to good eating, moderate drinking, occasional exercise and lots of fun.

Mr Doe, who turned 100 on September 16, said: “It’s really kind of the children to come and sing to me and help me celebrate my important birthday.

“I’ve had a lovely day and am really pleased that the centre manager decided to surprise me like this.”
