Smitham station is to be renamed Coulsdon Town to clearly mark its location.
Campaigners in Coulsdon have asked the station, located in the centre of town, have a more recognisable name.
Residents and station users were invited to vote for their preferred name, the majority of people opted for Coulsdon Town.
The council and train company Southern have started work to update road and rail signage, booklets and databases which run customer information systems. The new name is expected to be used in the spring timetable from May 22, 2011.
The name change follows the recent upgrade of the station.
Mark Ruddy, Network Rail’s Route Director for Sussex, said: "Good rail links are vital for connecting people and businesses.
"The new building and improved facilities reflect the station’s importance to the community and local economy, and improve the travelling experience for the passengers who use it for almost 300,000 journeys every year."
