The mother of a man who accidentally hanged himself in prison has called for his inquest to be reopened.

Gina Marriott, mother of Scott who died in High Down Prison in May 2008, said she was devastated at the verdict of accidental death at his inquest earlier this month.

The jury at Woking Coroner’s Court rejected an open verdict and decided Mr Marriott, from Sutton, died accidentally despite conflicting evidence.

Mrs Marriott, of Frimley Gardens, Mitcham, said: “I’m not happy with the result of the inquest, I want to see the case reopened because, if you knew my son, you knew he wouldn’t have killed himself.

“I don’t care what the inquest said, I made my mind straight away. He had so much going for him and so much to live for.

“I mean he was a joker who absolutely loved his family and, of course, women. He’s got nieces and nephews who adored him and used to cling to him.”

Mr Marriott, had threatened to kill himself after learning he was being moved 150 miles away from High Down Prison to a youth offenders’ centre in Norwich.

The 20-year-old who had a history of self-harm, had been jailed for eight months, in April 2008, for intimidating a witness connected to another case.

Mrs Marriott said: “His funeral was packed, he had so many friends and that speaks volumes about him really.”

Mr Marriott’s father Frank Saddler, who gave evidence at his inquest, paid tribute to his son.

He said: “Scott was just an ordinary boy. He wasn’t yobbish or a thug, just a normal kid for his age. He was incredibly loyal, if he was your best friend that was it for life. We all miss him so much.”
