Cinema seats will be swapped for saddles when a pedal-powered projector comes to a park.

Green group Sustainable Streatham has invited a cycle cinema to Streatham Common as part of an environmental awareness day.

People can park their bikes on a stand attached to a generator powering a projector.

Eight bikes at a time will then be ridden by people watching the film to create the electricity needed to run the cinema.

Celebrities linked to the area – including mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone – have even been invited to take a slot in the saddle.

The event will take place on October 10 as part of 10:10 – a campaign to get individuals and companies to reduce their carbon footprints by 10 per cent.

Organiser Scott Ainslie said: “It’s a fun way to teach people about the importance of finding alternative forms of energy and reducing the amount of carbon we produce.”

The cinema will be housed in a tent, with some 100 seats for cyclists who want to take a rest.

The event marks the first anniversary of Sustainable Streatham, which has more than 250 members.

The choice of film is also bike-related – the Academy award-nominated animation Belleville Rendez-vous.

The film will start at 7.30pm in a tent at the bottom of the common near Sainsbury’s in Streatham High Road.
