A couple who met playing golf over 60 years ago is celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary.

James and Vera Bradley, both 80, of Nursery Close, Ewell, met playing golf at the Epsom Downs before getting married in 1950 and are celebrating their anniversary today (Thursday, September 30).

Mr Bradley said: “We both played golf at Epsom Downs. Vera was captain and I was also captain, at the seniors. We played bowls together too. That’s how we met and we were married soon after that.

“I was born in Ewell and she was born in Epsom. We lived here all our lives.”

The couple has three daughters and four grandchildren who will be celebrating with them at two parties, one at the bowls club on Sunday and one which will also be attended by neighbours, on Thursday.

Mr and Mrs Bradley will then fly to Spain on holiday, to continue celebrating their anniversary.

When asked what the secret of a successful marriage was, Mr Bradley said: “We have to share things - give and take. That’s the main thing. We both played golf and bowls so we did things together.”

Another couple, of Longcroft Avenue, Banstead, John and Joan Waterson, have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Saturday (September 25).

They had friends and family attend a lunch at the Epsom Racecourse’s Grandstand, to celebrate.

Both are now aged 85 and have enjoyed retirement for many years.
