David Cameron's Big Society idea has put the word community on everybody's lips.

But, Homage De Fromage cheese club in Surbiton, have come up with their own spin on the politician's ideas.

They have become known for their wacky ideas, which have included kite surfing cheeses across the Channel, skiing with blocks of ice strapped to feet and giant Buckaroo.

Their latest is an event called the Kings' Soup, which has received financial backing from the council and takes place after Ski Sunday, on October 17.

It is a folk tale written more than 10 months ago, which highlights the difference an individual can make through their attitude about where they live.

It tells the story of a King with a full palace and empty heart who, through a series of events, tastes a lovingly made soup which changes his heart and teaches him the joy growing so he understands the value of community and friendship.

To celebrate the story and its values, people will congregate to build a massive table and work together to prepare and share the King's soup, with vegetables grown by local allotment holders.

Club president Robin Hutchinson said: "In Europe it is quite common for communities to come together to celebrate food.

"We hope that this will be the start of something special in Seething, Surbiton and Kingston.

"Importantly it is also about encouraging people of all ages to grow vegetables and to share the skills of preparing and cooking them.

"By next year we hope to be making soup from vegetables grown throughout our community - in window boxes, buckets, bags, boxes as well as straight in the garden."

Over the next few weeks the story will be told in schools and it is hoped that they will join in next year by growing their own produce.
