Sutton Schools Under-11s produced a devastating second-half performance to win 5-1 in a friendly at local rivals Merton on Saturday.
Sutton took a first-half lead after Alfie Doughty converted a penalty following a foul on Matthew Shaw and Merton were denied an equalizer when keeper Josh Barnard saved from point-blank range.
In the second half Sutton broke forward in devastating fashion and George Miller cleverly found Mikey Stephens who scored with a low shot from the edge of the box. Better was to follow in the move and goal of the match when Doughty’s 40m crossfield pass found Ellis Mottley who rounded the defender and put in a deep cross for Tate Greenaway to head home.
With Sutton rampant, Merton had simply no answer and things got worse for them as Renee Anto decided to get into the act with two quick goals, the second after a superb run and shot.
To their credit, Merton did come strongly at the end of the game and scored a consolation goal but with sweeper Mason Seagroatt in control at the back, Sutton finished comfortable and worthy winners.
South West Trains player of the match with an excellent performance in midfield was Charlie Quin. Sutton play Portsmouth at home this Saturday in the Southern League.
