Thanks to a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund pupils at Carew Manor School, in partnership with Wandle Valley School will be spending the next year working with SAVVY Theatre Company, exploring the heritage of their Grade 1 listed building.
Through specialist workshops SAVVY Theatre will work with the pupils to create a number of short films showing re-enacted moments from the building’s history. They will also create a fun online tour of the Hall.
The work created will be available online once the project is completed.
In addition to which, an ‘Accessing Your Heritage’ handbook and website will be developed outlining how other local teachers within the London Borough of Sutton can instigate heritage projects with their own school.
It is hoped that a project model can be established and used in the future, creating an annual Heritage Festival event that will unlock the history of other buildings and heritage sites through drama.
For the Heritage Lottery Fund Sue Bowers, Head of HLF London, said: “The project will enable the pupils of Carew Manor to explore the history of their impressive building and its connection with Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and to share their discoveries with other local schools in ways that appeal to the younger generation.”
