Twelve litterbugs have been slapped with on-the-spot fines after they were caught throwing rubbish on the streets of Tooting Bec.

The dozen £80 penalties were handed out to people caught dropping litter on the pavements around the station by Wandsworth Council’s anti-litter squad and officers from the Bedford and Nightingale wards police safer neighbourhoods teams.

Most were penalised for dropping cigarette butts or chewing gum.

If the fines are not paid within 28 days, the recipients will have to appear before magistrates, who have the powers to impose fines of up to £2,500.

Environment spokeswoman Councillor Sarah McDermott said: “There are plenty of these across the borough, especially in busy places like town centres and outside tube and rail stations, so there is no excuse for people to drop their rubbish on the pavement.”
