A station newspaper kiosk owner has been forced to hand over more than £1,000 after being caught with a bag of stolen sat navs.
Peter John Capone was found hoarding sat navs worth hundreds of pounds, several bags of European tobacco priced in Euros and £1,150 cash when police raided his kiosk at Wallington station in March.
The 67-year-old, who lives in Kennington, did not contest a civil hearing to forfeit the cash when he appeared at Sutton Magistrates’ Court on August 27.
He had already been given a six month jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to six counts of handling stolen goods at Croydon Crown Court on August 10.
He was also ordered to do 160 hours of unpaid community work and pay costs of £350.
Simon Pocock, financial investigator at Sutton Police Station, said “This case demonstrates the Metropolitan Police’s commitment to ensuring that crime does not pay, and that offenders will not benefit from whatever criminal activity they choose to engage in.”
