Surrey Police has sent a reminder to residents to protect their houses and cars now the darker evenings are on their way.

A spokesman for the force said: “Every year we see a rise in burglaries when the clocks go back and the evenings draw in with longer and darker nights. Often there can be tell tale signs for burglars to see where homes are empty.

“People will go out to work in the morning but if they don't come back home until after 6pm or 7pm in the evening then their home may have been in darkness for several hours.”

The spokesman said part of the problem was many people falsely assume burglary is something that would not happen to them.

Crime Reduction Officer Mark Howells said: "These are simple steps that people can take to help keep their property secure from thieves and ensure they see in the autumn and winter months safely. Many thieves are opportunistic, so make sure you aren't tempting them into your home or vehicle by keeping possessions out of sight.

“Security alarms and lights can be a worthwhile investment and deter would-be thieves. Taking those few moments to make sure your home or car is secure could save you a lot of time and inconvenience in the long run.

“Crime prevention advice is intended to reinforce your own security precautions. Everyone is responsible for the safety and security of our homes and property."
