A group of schoolboys from Harris Academy in Purley attacked another youth outside of Marks and Spencer in North End.
The attack, on Tuesday at 4.15pm resulted in the 70-year-old shopper needing treatment for a head injury.
Town centre police units arrived at the scene in a matter of minutes, arresting two youths and identifying four others.
Cops are currently trying to trace the boy who was attacked who, although he had nothing to do with the start of the fight or the injuries sustained by the elderly shopper, may have vital information about his attackers.
A police source said: “It was a proper scuffle but we got there within minutes of it starting and arrested two of them straight away.
“The lad who was being attacked just walked away because he hadn't done anything wrong but we'd still like to speak to him to get an idea of how and why it started.”
A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 4.19 pm on Tuesday, October 5, to reports of an assault on North End, Croydon.
“We sent one ambulance crew to the scene.
“Our staff treated one patient - a woman reported to be 70 years old - who was taken to hospital with a head injury.”
