Police have cordoned off two Morden shops this afternoon after a suspected armed robbery this afternoon.

Morden police were called to the Co-operative travel agent, in London Road, at 4.12pm.

The cordon extends around the neighbouring Specsavers’ opticians, but it is not believed this was also a target.

A Morden resident, who asked not to be named, said the travel agents’ staff looked “very emotional” as they stood outside the cordon in the aftermath of the incident.

He said: “It looks like the police have got a forensic team down here, they look like they’re bagging up evidence of some sort.

“There are at least 10 police officers here and some of them are consoling the Co-op staff, who look very emotional right now.”

A shop worker in the Oxfam charity shop across the road said there were nearly a dozen police officers inspecting the scene.

She said: “It’s all very busy down here. There are police cars, unmarked cars and a police van. Officers have been asking us if we saw anything and they have cordoned off the pavement in front of the shop.”

Customers trying to telephone the Morden branch are being automatically re-directed to their sister branch in Tolworth.

Police have said they are on the lookout for one black male, but were unable to provide a more accurate description.

Noone appears to have been injured in the incident.
